The SDG
Challenge
In partnership with Soapbox and Stellenbosch University students as consultants.
What is the SDG Challenge?
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The SDG Challenge is a competition held among South African universities. During the competition, students are encouraged to think outside of the box, solving real-life business cases targeted at enhancing one or multiple SDGs. This competition offers companies and organisations a unique opportunity to meet the most entrepreneurial and creative students at South African universities. The fact that we’re in direct contact with students, and able to contribute substantially to their progress with an eye on their future careers, makes the SDG Challenge an inspirational experience for partners and everyone involved.
Why Is Sanlam Investments participating in the challenge?
Our Investors’ Legacy Private Equity Fund collaborated with Stellenbosch University students to build a methodology/framework that will help measure job quality – an important metric that will assist with benchmarking the impact of our Investors’ Legacy Range.
According to its website, Stellenbosch University is one of the top universities in Africa, boasting the highest weighted research output per full-time academic staff member in the country. The combined research capabilities from Stellenbosch University and Sanlam Investments will develop impactful ways to improve the unemployment issue our country is facing. The initiative sits within the Sanlam Investments Sustainability Centre of Excellence which, amongst its several key focus areas, drives depth in impact measurement and the application of the UN SDGs.
